It is said that becoming a parent can get in the way of running a business; but for me the exact opposite is true.

When I started my business I instinctively felt that I should hide my feminine side, because that is what other women leaders who had gone before me did. I had only ever worked for men, so I didn’t have confidence in my own style, which at the time felt quite different.

Trying to combine having babies with growing a business has traditionally been regarded as an overly challenging idea that puts female founders at a big disadvantage to men.

I believe that every business leader should have a coach, no matter how big their business is or what stage of growth it is at. It can be lonely at the top, and just because you are in charge doesn’t mean you have all the answers.

We human beings love being with people who are just like us, because it feels easy and known and we instantly feel connected to them. Introducing diversity can therefore feel uncomfortable, we are more likely to accept challenge from someone that doesn’t look like us, so it means you are constantly being challenged on how you think about things and the assumptions you are making. It is hard work and can feel unpleasant.
